Four Dancers Perform Solo Variations of "I Think Not"

I Think Not is a solo dance that was choreographed by Deborah Hay for the 2011 Solo Performance Commissioning Project. Four of the 20 dancer/choreographers who attended the project in Findhorn, Scotland, last summer, will perform their solo adaptations of I Think Not.
Three performance dates at two locations:
February 15 and 16 at 7 and 9 pm @ Mercury Hall, 615 Cardinal Lane, Austin

Saturday February 18 at 7 and 9 pm. @ South Austin Studio (1700 Ashby), Austin

Deborah Hay has conducted the Solo Performance Commissioning Project in Findhorn, Scotland, since 2004. Dancers attend from all over the world. Eleven countries were represented in 2011. Ms. Hay will introduce these performances and speak a little about this project.

Yael Dayan – Israel’s Future and the Urgency of a New Path

J Street Austin is honored to present Yael Dayan. She will speak in Austin on what she calls “the best and only option for peace” – the urgency of a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and the necessity of American leadership to achieve it. She is the daughter of General Moshe Dayan, the 1967 Israeli war hero who captured Jerusalem and the Occupied Territories

A prominent writer, politician and peace activist, Dayan has long promoted and defended minority and women’s rights in Israel. A Knesset member from 1992 until 2003, she serves as the current chair of the Tel Aviv-Yafo City Council. Dayan is a signatory to the Geneva Accords.

The Austin Humane Society offers a FREE spay/neuter clinic just for stray/free-roaming cats every Wednesday and Thursday. The cats are examined, vaccinated, sterilized, eartipped, given a shot of pain medicine, treated for fleas, earmites and dewormed by our veterinarian. Caretakers then return the cats to their outdoor home.

These services are provided to humanely stop the uncontrolled population growth, improve the lives of the cats, minimize nuisance behavior and ensure ordinance compliance. Our program uses no taxpayer dollars and is absolutely free to the public.

Attend our workshop on May 16th to learn how to safely trap and transport the cats for sterilization and how to properly care for them after surgery! RSVP with Leticia Stivers at 512-646-7387 x101 if you plan to attend.

Five Days of Art Experiences Close out Month-Long Collaboration of Arts Organizations in Austin

From April 20 through May 1, 2011, Art Alliance Austin will host Art Week Austin, a series of featured experiences that encourage discussion, exploration and the celebration of Austin's creative community.

Focused this year on the several art happenings converging during Art Week Austin, patrons can take part in an unprecedented opportunity to experience cross-discipline collaboration and contemporary art in Austin at its best. Happenings include AMOA's triennial New Art in Austin: 15 to Watch, Texas Biennial, ON SITE/New Work, Fusebox Festival and “Play Me, I’m Yours.”

The month-long, citywide interactive art installation invites Austinites to explore and enhance the city’s soundscape. Part of an international project by artist Luke Jerram and curated by Austin artist Johnny Walker, “Play Me, I’m Yours” allows people to engage with, activate and take ownership of their environment via sound and, for those inclined, song.

Pecha Kucha Night was devised in Tokyo in 2003 and has turned into a massive celebration, with events happening in hundreds of cities around the world. Drawing its name from the Japanese term for the sound of "chit chat", it rests on a presentation format that is based on a simple idea: 20 images x 20 seconds. Pecha Kucha Night Austin, co-produced by Art Alliance Austin, was started in Austin by Herman Dyal and Carla Fraser, who recently handed over the curatorial direction to Lana McGilvray and DJ Stout.

Umlauf Garden Party

The Umlauf Garden Party celebrates the work of 20^th century American sculptor, Charles Umlauf, an internationally recognized artist and Austin resident. Event highlights include the “Celebrity Seeds” silent auction featuring terra cotta pots decorated by a who’s who list of Austinites; wine and savories by more than 20 of Austin’s top restaurants; and music by the Nash Hernandez Orchestra, with the lush Umlauf Garden as the backdrop. This year’s honorary chair is Mary Margaret Farabee and the featured artist is Roi James.

Proceeds raised directly benefit the Umlauf Sculpture Garden & Museum and its programs, including the museum’s award-winning education programs for children. Paula D'Arcy lecture at Central Presbyterian Church

Paula D'Arcy, a writer, retreat leader, and conference and seminar speaker, travels widely in the United States, Canada, and abroad. She is also President of the Red Bird Foundation, which supports the growth and spiritual development of those in need and furthers a ministry both to those in prison and those living in third world or disadvantaged cultures.
Paula's ministry grew from personal tragedy. In 1975 she survived a drunk driving accident, which took the lives of her husband and twenty-one-month-old daughter. Pregnant at the time, Paula survived the accident to give birth to a second daughter, Beth Starr.
A former psychotherapist who ministered to those facing issues of grief and loss, Paula worked with the Peale Foundation, founded by Dr. Norman Vincent Peale, from 1980 until his death in 1993. Today her work includes leading workshops and retreats related to spirituality, aspiring writers, and women's gatherings, including Women's Initiation and Rites of Passage. In recent years she has teamed with Richard Rohr to present seminars on the Male/Female Journey and Spirituality in the Two Halves of Life.

Put It Back: Geologic Sequestration for Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reductions

In this talk, Dr. Tip Meckel will discuss one of the promising but little known options to reduce atmospheric emissions of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide (CO2). Oxidation (by burning) of carbon stored in fossil fuels—coal, oil, gas—has transferred more than 250 billion tons of carbon into the atmosphere since 1800. Changes in atmospheric concentration of CO2 show that the rates of emission exceed the rates of uptake, resulting in increases of atmospheric CO2. Fossil fuel reserves and rapidly growing global energy demand suggest that continuation of “business as usual” will result in rapidly increasing concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere. A variety of risks ranging from increased average temperature to decreased pH of ocean surface water are predicted from this change.

One method of reducing CO2 emissions, while still using fossil fuel resources, is to capture the CO2 from the combustion source before it is released to the atmosphere, and re-inject it into the subsurface of geologic environments similar to those from which it was extracted. This “put it back” process is known as carbon capture and geologic sequestration. Meckel’s research focuses on developing and testing techniques to assure that geologic sequestration sites will retain stored CO2 for geologically significant time periods.

Dr. Tip Meckel conducts sequestration research for the Bureau of Economic Geology (BEG) at The University of Texas at Austin. He joined the Gulf Coast Carbon Center at BEG in 2006 focusing on geologic characterization, structural geology, monitoring design, and pressure evolution for CO2 injections. Dr. Meckel directs the research program for the Southeast U.S. Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnership in Cranfield Mississippi, and leads the Texas research initiative to identify sequestration potential in state offshore lands.

Dr. Meckel earned his master’s degree in geology from the University of Montana in Missoula in 1998, and his doctorate in geology from The University of Texas at Austin in 2003. He subsequently taught undergraduate geology at Colby College in Maine before working with the U.S. Geological Survey as a Mendenhall Postdoctoral Fellow on subsidence issues in Louisiana.

Visualization is the process of transforming the complex into what can be seen. Visualization began with the use of illustrations and drawings and has evolved to include interactive real-time digital imagery. A significant percentage of our brainpower is devoted to the visual cortex. Through visualizations, the human visual system is the workhorse that drives the understanding of society's most complex problems.

In tandem with the growth and evolution of visualization, the science community faces two extraordinary and relatively sudden transitions in technology with transformative potential for computational research and education. First is the widespread adoption of high performance computing (HPC). Concurrently, advances in digital technologies (networking, instruments, etc.) have facilitated the generation and capture of observed data at an explosive rate. Visualization holds the key to unlocking the information locked inside what can be insurmountable amounts of numbers and data.

In this talk, Dr. Kelly Gaither will discuss why visualization is such a powerful tool for understanding the complex. Additionally, Dr. Gaither will illustrate the impact that visualization has had in transforming science in both the past and the present, and the promise it holds for impact in our future's most challenging problems.

Dr. Kelly Gaither is the director of Data and Information Analysis at the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC). Her research interests include scientific visualization, feature detection, illumination and visualization techniques, and visualization applications. She is currently working on projects that address feature detection techniques, real-time rendering of complex time-dependent data sets, and remote and collaborative visualization. Before joining TACC, Dr. Gaither worked as a research professor in computational engineering at Mississippi State University. She is a member of IEEE and ACM and has published numerous scientific papers. Dr. Gaither earned a bachelor and master’s degree in computer science from Texas A&M University, and a PhD in computational engineering from Mississippi State University.

Five-time Grammy®-nominated choir Conspirare explores the riches of Renaissance polyphonic music in a dramatic concert series over a single weekend. The series comprises four distinct programs of works by Josquin Des Prez, Orlandus Lassus, Tomás Luis de Victoria, and J.S. Bach, and each concert also features a world premiere written in response to the early masters by series composer-in-residence Robert Kyr. Kyr will be present at all concerts and will give a pre-concert talk before three of the four performances.

Austin jazz lovers will have a unique opportunity to hear live performances of the early traditional jazz of the world-renowned Jim Cullum Jazz Band at a special music and dinner series hosted by Annies Café & Bar at 319 Congress Avenue January 20 and 27 as well as February 3 and 17, from 7 to 10 pm each evening.

The Jim Cullum Jazz Band has appeared in such venues as Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center, the White House, Austin City Limits television program, major worldwide jazz festivals, and stars in its own Public Radio International series, Riverwalk Jazz, broadcasting since 1987, heard on over 150 public radio stations nationwide and on XM/Sirius Radio’s Real Jazz station.

The Jim Cullum Jazz Band plays jazz in the classic manner, that is, in the style of small, hot ensembles prior to WWII. The band's repertoire covers a lot of ground – from 19th-century cakewalks to the small pre-war Benny Goodman ensembles. The core of the band's music consists of the sounds of Jelly Roll Morton, Original Dixieland Jazz Band, New Orleans Rhythm Kings, King Oliver Creole Jazz Band, Louis Armstrong, and Sidney Bechet, as well as a heavy emphasis on Bix Beiderbecke and Hoagy Carmichael.

In keeping with the band's historical point of view, period instruments and performance practices are often used. Each member of the band is a specialist in historically informed jazz styles. Leader Jim Cullum plays a cornet (instead of the trumpet or flugelhorn used in modern jazz), which was the instrument preferred by early jazz masters King Oliver, Louis Armstrong and Bix Beiderbecke.

Annies Café & Bar is hosting this special four-evening “Winter in New Orleans” traditional jazz series to celebrate its new French Quarter inspired bistro and bar menu. There will be no cover charge with dinner or appetizer purchase.

Music and Dance: Curley Taylor and Zydeco Trouble @ Mercury Hall 1/30/11

Curley Taylor and Zydeco Trouble are making a third Austin appearance Sunday, January 30 for an afternoon dance at Mercury Hall, 615 Cardinal Lane (off S. First, between Oltorf & Ben White).

Sponsored by austinzydecodancers for the sole purpose of enjoying an authentic Louisiana dance band without having to actually drive all the way to Louisiana, the group also plans to offer a free beginner Zydeco dance lessons. “Local clubs book Zydeco acts infrequently, so we decided to sponsor our own dance and bring in a great band to play for it,” said Michele Ramshur, spokesperson for the group organizing the event.

Curley Taylor’s band played Austin for a similar dances in 2010 and 2007, also sponsored by austinzydecodancers. His CDs “Country Boy” and “Free Your Mind” have widened Taylor’s audience considerably. Artists have compared his music to the great Beau Jocque. "It's a high compliment," Curley said, "but this is only the start."

Taylor started playing drums in his father's band in his teens. By age of 25, he had played drums for some of Louisiana's finest legends including: CC Adcock, Steve Riley, John Hart, "Lil" Bob of the Lollipops, and his uncles, "Lil Buck" Senegal and Wayne "Blue" Burns. While touring with CJ Chenier, Taylor found an interest in the accordion, and quickly learned to play the instrument. A few years later he moved from drums to fronting his own band.
