Nakia
Friday February 25, 2011

Whether leading his much loved but now defunct Southern Cousins or his latest project the Blues Grifters, or creating a legendary Austin City Limits Music Festival moment with his guest vocal turn with Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Nakia is well known for his larger-than-life, soulful vocal performances. Texas Music Magazine says “His live performances are akin to a religious experience. With his first full-length release, Water To Wine, Nakia captures his trademark soulful, spiritual sound. It’s a big, theatrical voice, and an execution that’s Southern gospel with more than a hint of Joe Cocker.”

His recent live performances, including an amazing set during SXSW at St. David’s Bethell Hall, deliver all of that soul and excitement while also giving an intimate glimpse into the stories and characters of Nakia’s songs. His latest efforts are presented as if you were a guest in his Austin home. In an Austin Chronicle article, he explained the decision to redirect his playing and writing: "Performing behind the piano is where it really all started for me. Many of these songs I'm singing are the purest of my songwriting. It's pretty cathartic for me on a lot of levels.”

An amazing vocalist singing songs of spirit, soul, introspection and catharsis sounds like a sure-fire formula for a great evening in our listening room. However, if you want to get up and shake your booty, chances are you will have an opportunity to do so. Don’t miss this very special evening with Nakia.

Jean Synodinos delivers "smart-sexy acoustic soul for the big kids in the room." Known for dynamic performances of "grit and grace," she lives to read the room and deliver shows that keep audiences returning for more. Jean opens the show at 7:30 PM. Doors open at 6. $15 suggested donation.
